The Making of the Zoo Babies Birthday Card

This week I had a coworker ask me if I would make him a birthday card suitable for a 1 year old’s birthday.  Of course I jumped at the opportunity to make something special, but I had a team meeting that evening, and I was a little worried about what I could do late that night, in a hurry, tired and exhausted…….when I really wanted to crash in my bed!  I didn’t have time to over-think this dilemma!  I glanced at my shelf and decided that ZOO BABIES was my best bet, quickly pulled up some ideas on Pinterest, and went to town creating!

I’d love to tell you that these 2 cards were perfect the FIRST TIME I tried to stack up those animals!  Oh, that would have been way too easy!  It was a comedy of errors, for sure!  I was doing pretty good until I got to the monkey.  I was making TWO cards (instead of the one he ordered) so that I’d have one to keep in my stash.  I want to be PREPARED the next time I need a little baby’s birthday card, right?  So, back to the monkey!  I get it inked up with Tangerine Tango and press down — only to find that there is VERY little ink on the paper.  Oops!  Guess I don’t love Tangerine Tango too much.  It was very dry.  No problem.  One card ruined.  I’ll just make the other one work, and GO TO BED!  So I grabbed the next best “orange” known to us as Pumpkin Pie!  Almost the same…….here we go with a Pumpkin Pie monkey.  Ink it up, press it down…….mistake #2!!!  I accidentally didn’t grab the monkey.  I grabbed the zebra!!!  So now card #2 has two zebras on top of each other.  Oops!

It gets better.  I cut out 2 more Whisper White bases, started all over, built the animal pyramid #3 and #4, only to make 2 more mistakes.  I was so tired that I can’t remember what happened, but they quickly went to the trash bin, as well.  The cards you see above are cards #5 and #6.  I have to be honest……some days are just like this!  But I’m so glad that I kept on going and got these two precious cards done and delivered to the office.  As I type this, I am just reminded that God gives me second chances, and third chances, and even more!  How thankful I am!  Sometimes I am a mess.  God doesn’t give up on me.  He keeps on going and gives me an even greater blessing in return!  Even when I don’t deserve it.  Praise the Lord!

I know that so many of you think that I never make mistakes — FAR from it! And I really should have taken photos before I trashed those cards.  But the extra cards gave me 2 little “ears” to cut out for my little elephants.  Do you see the ears that are mounted on Dimensionals?  Such a subtle little touch, yet so nice to add some dimension to this card.

I hope you have a blessed day………remember to keep on going and never give up!

Herringbone DSP Cards

These cards today were made by my daughter Allyson using the same technique as the cards posted yesterday.  She decided to cover the entire card front with strips of DSP.  The strips are 1/4″ and 1/2″.  Don’t you love how beautiful they are?  And they show off the new DSP collections so well!   She used the English Garden and Pretty Petals Designer Series Papers.

I forgot to show you this sample of how the cards get started.  This photo might help you get a visual of how to start laying the strips down — and once you have the first few in place, things are easy from there.  Please message me if you have any questions and I’ll be happy to help!

August Club Class Cards

Last week we had our August Club class, and this is one of the designs that we made.  I called it a Herringbone Card, but really not sure this is the right name.  Oh, well, it looks good and sounds good, and I received my inspiration from a blog called Canopy Crafts by Nance Leedy.

I made several variations of this card, as shown above, so that my gals could see how fun all the DSP patterns were!  I made one, and then decided on two, and then just couldn’t stop!  I loved them all!  The whimsicality of this paper has really stolen my heart and I think I’m on the fourth pack of this paper already!  I’ve used it in various classes and everyone else loves it, too.  It comes in a 6×6 paper stack and sells for $8.  I think it is really fun starting with the smaller papers — they are quite handy to use!

Come back tomorrow for some cards my daughter made using this same style, but she added a little more.  They are very fun — and they look so challenging.  But they aren’t!  See you next time!  Here’s how we lined up our 1/2″ paper strips:
